Speech from the Throne - CESA

The Governor General of Canada opened a new parliamentary session Wednesday with the customary Speech from the Throne. Mrs. Payette’s speech outlined the government’s legislative agenda and key priorities and addressed the immediate health and economic needs of Canadians. The focus of this speech was economic recovery in the face of COVID-19, and measures that will help Canadians and the economy return to prosperity.

Support measures such as the extension of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program through the summer of 2021, investment in liquidity measures including enhancements to the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) and Business Credit Availability Program (BCAP), and further support for industries that have been the hardest hit, including travel and tourism, hospitality, and cultural industries like the performing arts.

We are working to ensure that the office of the Minister of Canadian Heritage understands our industry and that the endurance event space will require additional relief to survive. Furthermore, we will be meeting with the appropriate people in the finance, fed dev, and tourism departments because we’re not simply a ‘sport-file’.

Thank you for using your voice and networks to amplify the Canadian Endurance Sports Alliance message. Together, we can help this industry find some much-needed relief and predictability to withstand the pandemic. If you haven't yet, please call your Member of Parliament.

The Throne Speech will lead to a vote of confidence in the House of Commons in the coming days, and could be key in deciding if Canada will hold a federal election in the Fall.
